You have to understand. I am no one special. I am just a single girl. I am five feet two inches tall and I am in-between in every way.

–Lena, Delirium

Magdalena Ella Haloway, best known as Lena, is a normal girl from Portland, Maine. She is the main character in Delirium, Pandemonium, and Requiem and has supporting roles in numerous short stories. In Lena's society, love is considered deadly and a disease. All citizens get evaluated on their personalities and matched with a few different people. People can choose from a list of the evaluation results whom they marry. Most people get cured at 18, and as a result of the cure, people become more withdrawn and cut off from their emotions. The cure was invented to prevent wars, stabilize citizens' emotions, and save them from heartbreak. Lena's story follows that of her normal life until she eventually confronts the lies and propaganda of her society, doing the worst thing imaginable as she falls in love.

Biography (WARNING: Book spoilers are below!)[]

Early Life[]

On September 3rd, eighteen years before the events of Delirium, Magdalena "Lena" Ella Haloway was born in Portland, Maine to Conrad Haloway and Annabel Haloway, with a sister, Rachel Haloway, already nine years old. Purportedly Lena was named after Mary Magdalene from The Book of Shhh, the first woman ever to be cured of the dreaded amor deliria nervosa.

Sadly, Lena would never get to know her father, as he died of a brain tumor shortly after she was born. However, her earliest memories were happy ones. Her mother had never been properly cured of the deliria and thus loved her children deeply--playing games and laughing with them long into the night. Lena would later be much conflicted about these events as society viewed such behavior as bad while she could not help but think of them as good.

These good times were not to last long, however. Regulators got called in as Annabel continued to show far too much emotion. At this point, Annabel had three procedures for the cure, and many of her relatives believed that the regulators would drag her to a fourth one.

That night, as Annabel tucked Lena into bed, she whispered the words that would forever haunt Lena. "I love you. Remember. They cannot take it."

Annabel subsequently disappeared, and for many years Lena was told, and believed, that her mother had committed suicide. Rachel and Lena--now technically orphans--went to go live with their Aunt Carol Tiddle and her family.

Life with the Tiddles was not unpleasant but certainly loveless. Lena later remembered that she wished her aunt would hold her hand and reassure her as she walked to school that everything would be all right, but she knew that would never happen.

Though Lena did not find love at home, she did find a lifelong friend and confidante in Hana Tate, who she met around this time and slowly became close friends with.

This time of peace got broken when Rachel Haloway fell in love at seventeen with a boy named Thomas. Though they later broke up, Rachel began to reject the cure and refused the procedure, which nonetheless happened on her eighteenth birthday. Lena--seeing her sister kick and hiss like an animal when the regulators came, along with reminders of her mother's suicide--began to cement the image in her mind that love was truly a bad thing. From that day forward, she counted the days before her procedure and eagerly looked forward to it.

Their family continued to be marred with unfortunate incidents. Several years later, Lena's cousin's husband was indicted as being a sympathizer. He fled, and his wife, Marcia Tiddle, was indicted in his place. She died shortly afterward--most likely from the stress of it all--and left another two children in Carol's care.

These events would lead to rumors that there was bad blood in Lena's family line, causing many to mistrust and treat her poorly.

Delirium (WARNING: Book spoilers are below!)[]

Main article: Delirium

Due to how her mother and sister were caught with deliria, Lena begins Delirium counting down the days to her cure with glee. She starts as a shy, cautious girl, vastly contrasting her best friend, Hana Tate, who is confident and curious. Lena is also shown to be a kind, understanding person, and the only person her cousin Grace (who doesn't say a word to anyone else) talks to. Grace and Lena comfort each other through their nightmares and longing for the mothers they have lost. Despite finding her other cousin, Jenny, picking on Grace to be unkind, Lena calmly encourages Grace to speak to everyone else.

Even before the day of her evaluation, Lena works on her interview procedure with her aunt Carol. She enters the interview procedure alongside Hana, expecting an average score that would secure her a reasonable match and allow her to proceed to college.

Sheepatevaluation

Lena Haloway's evaluation in the Delirium Pilot where the stampede of cows is turned into a stampede of sheep.

Upon her first interview, Lena starts to panic because her answers are a little bit out of the ordinary. When asked what her favorite book is, she says Romeo and Juliet and then answers that her favorite color is grey instead of a safe color like blue or green. Just as things seem to be going downhill, a stampede of cows interrupts the evaluations as a protest of the cure. This is where Lena gets her first sight of Alex Sheathes, and she thinks he is an Invalid in that instant because he is laughing at the stampede before disappearing. Lena later finds her evaluation results got erased, and she can start over.

Next, Hana encourages Lena to trespass upon government property, where Lena officially meets Alex. Alex worked as security there, and Lena sees that Alex has a three-pronged scar behind his ear (a sign that he got the cure) and learns that he is nineteen. Alex makes an excuse as to why he was on the evaluation deck that day to put Lena's mind at ease. He also gives her a secret message about a time and place to meet, but supposedly, Lena was too late on getting there.

Additionally, in the months before they are to be cured, Lena notices a change in her best friend, Hana. Lena sees signs of Hana resisting the cure, such as despising how being paired and cured does not give them much of a choice. Lena becomes frightened of Hana and disagrees with her friend's viewpoints. But later on, Lena goes to Hana's house to discover that her friend has not only been listening to illegal music but has been sneaking out to illegal parties. At these secret parties, girls and boys are free to touch, laugh, and listen to music without the government surveying their every move. Lena becomes upset that Hana is doing this and feels she doesn't know her anymore. Hana insults Lena by saying that she will never end up like her mom because she believes she does not have it in her.

Despite her hesitation, Lena decides to go to the party at Roaring Brookes, but only to prove to Hana that she is not afraid. Once Lena saw Hana, she planned to go home right after. As she was about to go, she saw Alex again, who mentioned he did want to meet her. Alex claimed that he came to the party for the music, and the two shared a brief dance. Alex then asked Lena to meet him again later on.

Race

Alex and Lena race through Back Cove by Sgushenka.

Believing Alex was safe and cured, Lena met him, raced him through the waters of Back Cove, and told him about her mom. After revealing some personal information about her mom, Alex reveals that he is not cured, that his scar is fake, and that he grew up in The Wilds (a forbidden place where uncureds can roam freely). Alex then told Lena that he liked her. Frightened, Lena ran away from Alex, and Alex put a note in the governor's fist (a statue that Hana and Lena used to run past), saying he was sorry to her.

After completing a successful second interview, Lena gets matched with Brian Scharff, whom Aunt Carol deems a suitable match. However, soon afterward, Lena learns Hana is going to another illegal party in Deering Highlands.

On the night of that party, Lena learns that a raid is going on. Once everyone in her house is asleep, she sneaks out of her house to go and warn Hana of the oncoming raid.

When Lena gets there, the raid starts and a dog attacks her viciously. Alex swiftly rescues her from harm and gets her to a shack in the woods, where he heals her. Lena is still hesitant to be around Alex but begins to feel guilty because she was told to fear people like Alex all her life, and he had saved her. Meanwhile, the regulators who were supposed to be protecting people were harming people. Alex tells Lena again that he likes her, and Lena questions why he likes her. Alex tells her that his parents are dead and that he was raised by many "aunts and uncles." He says he joined the resistance at the age of 10 and disliked the borders and walls outside the Wilds. Finally, Alex reveals that he likes Lena because when she ran past the governor's statue, she looked positively upbeat and happy, like a bird soaring free. Alex says everyone seemed asleep while she seemed awake and that he is tired of sleeping. Lena tells Alex he does not know her, and Alex responds by saying that he would like to get to know her. Then, Alex and Lena kiss, and Lena discovers that she is falling into the same path her mother had many years ago: the path of the amor deliria nervosa. But she learns to ignore it and finds herself falling in love with Alex.

Walkingonbeach

Alex and Lena walking by the beach in the Delirium Pilot.

Alex persuades Lena to meet up with him on several occasions. When Alex meets Lena at her job, Hana catches them, and Lena reveals her relationship with Alex and his status as an Invalid. Luckily, Hana covers for Lena for a while. Alex and Lena met at Back Cove and then more frequently at 37 Brooks, which becomes their regular meeting spot and their hideaway from society. Throughout the time Alex and Lena dated, they would occasionally let Hana third-wheel them, play Scrabble, dance, talk about their pasts (to which Alex comforted Lena sweetly when she missed her mom), and Lena was even comfortable enough with looking at Alex without a shirt on and letting him look at her without her shirt on. Alex told her she was beautiful, and eventually, Lena begins to believe this herself. Additionally, Lena claims that she likes Alex for his calm confidence and because he is a good listener.

On one occasion, Lena is taken beyond the fence lines of her society and into The Wilds by Alex. He shows Lena what life could be like, and Lena realizes that some of the things her society had taught her were lies. Lena finds there is not much food in The Wilds, and that some parts of it got bombed. Alex and Lena look at the nighttime stars through Alex's trailer, and Alex introduces Lena to poems, which were banned once the cure was introduced.

Once Lena and Alex crossed back, Lena was upset to find that her aunt Carol forced Lena to meet her pair, Brian, when she wanted to meet Alex. Lena is also upset when behind her back, Brian says she looked prettier in pictures. Brian explains to Lena that he meant she looked happier in the pictures, and he seems to decipher that Lena has a love interest. Brian tells Lena that he fell in love with a girl before he was cured and that when she gets cured, she will feel better because it will take all her pain away. Lena also believes she saw Alex when Brian held her hand.

Lena went to her and Alex's usual meeting place at 37 Brooks to see their games cleaned up. Not too long afterward, Lena began to break down, and Alex showed up. Lena told Alex that her aunt forced her to meet Brian and that she never truly knew what anything meant until she met him. Alex was sweet, full of understanding, and told Lena that he did not want to see her crying. Alex showed Lena some poems he had brought back with him from the Wilds, and Lena described her mom's pendant to Alex. Shocked, Alex told Lena he believed her mom might be alive and in the Crypts (Portland’s prison for resisters). When Alex had worked at the Crypts, he believes he saw that same pendant.

So, Alex and Lena went to the Crypts. Alex revealed that his father had died and was buried in the Crypts, and Lena found her mom was alive and had escaped the Crypts. That was when Lena realized everyone was lying to her and that she should escape with Alex permanently into The Wilds. Lena was also hurt, wondering why her mom had not come back for her, and snapped to the conclusion that she didn't care. Alex insisted that wasn't true, and that Lena's mother didn't come back to get her for her safety. Alex was hesitant about leaving with Lena permanently because even though he had originally suggested it, he knew it would be dangerous. Then, Alex told Lena he loved her, Lena said she loved him back, and they planned their escape together. The only people Lena would regret leaving behind were Hana and Grace.

Lena could not go without telling Hana and saying goodbye. Unfortunately, when Lena met up with Alex at 37 Brooks again, she was captured, placed under house arrest, and tied to her bed to stop her from escaping, and her cure got moved forward. Lena's sister Rachel came to the house to give her some water, and pills, and to convince her that the cure was for the best. Lena told her sister that their mom was alive, but Rachel did not believe her. When Hana came, Lena gave her a signal to give a note to Alex so there was a chance he could save her.

Escape

Later on, Grace helps Lena to escape by untying her bonds, and Lena realizes that Grace may not have talked as a way of resistance against the cure. Grace shouts "Wait!" to Lena's family, and Lena flees from her window to Alex below with a motorbike. A chase follows, and when they are being shot at, Alex switches places with Lena on the motorbike. Upon reaching the fence, Alex tells Lena to climb and run while he sacrifices himself in the process. Alex is shot, and it is believed Alex died.

Afterward, Lena flees into the Wilds, and the book ends.

Pandemonium (WARNING: Book spoilers are below!)[]

Main article: Pandemonium

Although Pandemonium goes by now versus then perspectives, the events on this wiki page are stated in chronological order…

Lena running by Unknown.

After the events of Delirium, Lena finds herself exhausted from running for days in the Wilds. She is revived by a woman not much older than herself called Raven. Lena has a hard time letting go of some of the old ideas she believed in before, and she grieves, thinking Alex is dead and knowing Hana is cured.

Eventually, Raven wants Lena to get working. Lena agrees, knowing her new group has done a lot for her and that she would not likely survive by herself. At first, Lena is not strong enough to carry buckets of water from the group’s former location to their new one. But Lena finds a way to motivate herself by imagining that Alex is still alive and waiting for her, and she grows stronger the more she lifts.

Lena acknowledges that Hunter, unlike Raven, Tack, and everyone else in her group, is friendlier, and she admires this about him. Hunter tells Lena the paint on their trees got put there by resisters working inside the borders. The paint shows when new shipments of food, clothing, and medical supplies arrive in the Wilds. Green means that a new shipment will arrive, yellow means there is a delay, and red means their area in the Wilds is in danger, and they should flee.

The group goes south for the winter, and Tack and Hunter go on a mission inside the borders. Meanwhile, Miyako, a person from their group, gets sick and dies. The group barely has enough energy to dig a hole to bury her, and Raven decides to burn her. Lena does not like this and thinks she deserves a burial, but does not stop Raven.

When there is no news from Tack and Hunter on the other side, Raven gets worried. Then, Lena notices the trees have red paint on them and warns the group to flee just in time as parts of the Wilds get bombed.

Due to recent events, Raven teaches Lena to hunt because she knows she may not always be there to help her. Raven forces Lena to kill a rabbit even though she doesn’t want to and reveals she knows the name of the boy she escaped with, Alex. Enraged over this, Lena fights Raven.

Despite their fight, Raven wants Lena in the resistance. Lena gets a fake procedural scar, which is a painful process. But this brief joyful moment does not last long since Blue, a girl Raven cares for like a daughter, gets sick. Although Raven has always insisted that the past is dead and pretends it does not exist, she reveals her past to Lena. The cure did not work correctly on Raven’s father because he was violent. And one fateful day, when she was 15, Raven found Blue as a baby. Blue was named Blue because her face was blue when Raven found her. Blue got abandoned in a dumpster, and she was dying. She was the abandoned baby of a diseased couple. Raven fled across the border with Blue one rainy day when security was poor. Raven wanted to be the parental figure she never had with Blue.

Unfortunately, Blue was not able to recover from her illness. She died, and Raven buried Blue, crying and laying her jacket over her corpse. But the group did not have much time to grieve since Scavengers, the uncured who are nasty, violent, and steal from others, tried to kill them and take their supplies. Luckily, at the right moment, Tack and Hunter find the group and kill the Scavengers.

After all the chaos, Lena finds peace and togetherness, eating with a nice family she and her group found. Raven is happier now that Tack and Hunter are back, and Lena decides to become an active part of the resistance because she knows it was what Alex believed in.

Lena joins Raven and Tack on a mission inside the border in New York, and they get fake IDs and identities. They live in an apartment together. Their cover story is that Raven and Tack are a cured couple, and Lena is Raven’s sister who lives with her and her husband because their parents are dead. Even though she is 18 and is a fake cured, Lena is put back into a high school setting; named Lena Morgan Jones. Lena is slightly embarrassed when she wakes up in class after dreaming she was with Alex back at 37 Brooks. Additionally, a teacher at the school questions why Lena does not get along well with the girls in her class, and Lena pretends the other girls are too immature for her because she is cured. The teacher buys that Lena is tired because she is stressed over her workload.

Next, Raven and Tack assign Lena to spy on Julian Fineman, son of DFA (Deliria Free America) leader Thomas Fineman. At first, Lena hates Julian because he is everything she stands against and because the DFA is responsible for what happened to Alex. Despite that and the Scavengers attacking everyone at the DFA conference, Lena does what Raven ordered and follows Julian. She loses him at first but finds him, and she is held hostage with him by Scavengers.

Cell

Lena and Julian in a cell by tilt-the-heavens, DeviantArt.

Lena and Julian are left with nothing more to do but talk to each other in their cell. Occasionally, food and water will get slipped in. Lena finds Tack had hidden a knife for her in her umbrella and wonders how she could get them out of there with it. Julian talks about his nightmares, and Lena tells him of a time when she used to play pretend with her mom as a child. Julian also tells her about times he used to pretend things as a child. Lena feels oddly satisfied when she lets Julian twist around a piece of her hair. Julian says to Lena that one time when he read forbidden fairy tales, his dad beat him up for it and that he had a brother, but he is dead. Lena begins to see Julian is not a bad person but loathes his father. Then, Lena reveals that she is an Invalid. Julian is angered by this, assuming she is just like the Scavengers that had beaten him up for top-secret DFA information. Lena tries to tell Julian that Scavengers and Invalids are not the same.

The following day, Julian wonders whether Lena is her real name, and she insists that it is. Julian also tells her he heard her say Alex’s name in her sleep and wonders if he is the one who infected her. Lena bitterly states that Alex is dead because of Julian’s people. However, the two decide to put their differences aside and escape together. Once a Scavenger comes to their cell, Lena and Julian jump him and tie him down with the help of Lena’s knife. Lena figures out that the Scavengers and the DFA worked together to stage the attack, but Julian refuses to believe this. There is a security code they need to figure out to escape a room they are in, and Julian figures it out. But before they escape through the tunnels, they kill two Scavengers in self-defense. Lena gains a newfound sense of appreciation for Julian since he saved her life.

Lena and Julian share warmth and rest together in the tunnels. Julian reveals to Lena that his brother was violent and disobedient. Julian’s brother went to a rally against the DFA, and his dad caught him. Julian’s dad locked his brother up and let him die from his injuries. Julian is unsure of what’s right and wrong anymore but knows that he is less scared alongside Lena.

Briefly, Lena undresses and sees Julian looking at her like Alex did: like she’s beautiful. She also sees he is a caring person like Alex, and Lena feels drawn to him when he gently tries to help heal her wounds. The Scavengers almost find them when another group of people kill the Scavengers and take Julian and Lena hostage. These people live underground, and their faces are deformed. Lena remembers learning before that deliria babies have deformed faces. These people let Julian and Lena escape aboveground to a homestead.

At the homestead, Lena and Julian bathe and redress. Lena tells Julian she was a runner before, and Julian tells Lena about growing up in New York and wanting to study mathematics. Lena’s desire for Julian grows. Julian asks Lena if she still thinks about Alex, and she says she tries not to because it’s painful. Julian states he wants to know about deliria, and Lena kisses him. She feels happy for the first time since losing Alex. However, she and Julian are taken by regulators the following morning.

The regulator who takes Lena is secretly a freedom fighter and has a Crypts number tattooed on her arm. The freedom fighter woman leaves, and Raven and Tack tell Lena their group will relocate to Waterbury. Lena is shocked to learn from Tack and Raven that the Scavengers taking her and Julian were staged to do so by Raven and Tack. They wanted Julian, a powerful political figure, to be caught to get more cureds to join the resistance. Lena is upset that Julian may die for the cause. Lena remembers that the cure could kill him due to previous surgeries to remove cancer. She also knows she has given up many people she loved and does not want to make the same mistake with Julian, so she leaves Raven and Tack, hoping it is not too late to save him.

Lena finds and searches Julian’s home to discover he is not there. She hides when Thomas Fineman is near, and a book lands in her hand. Lena finds the book has the numbers of Crypts prisoners and looks for her mother. Lena finds the woman freedom fighter from before was her mother because the Crypts number tattooed on her arm matched the one in the book. Lena is disappointed that her mom chose not to reveal herself.

Lena goes to the lab where Julian is to be cured with a fake ID. She finds the room Julian is in and goes onto an observation deck. Then, Raven shows up in a disguise and kills Thomas Fineman and some regulators with a gun. Raven, Lena, and Julian escape to Tack outside in a van.

Pandemoniumalex

Alex returns by FireLordWael, DeviantArt.

Once they are back in the Wilds, Raven reveals she did not know the woman freedom fighter was Lena’s mom. Raven talks about an escaped Crypts fugitive from Portland who might know about her mom, though.

Later, Julian and Lena are alone and kiss each other. Julian asks Lena to promise to never leave him, and Lena promises when someone says, “Don’t believe her.” It is Alex. Lena notes that Alex is skinnier, his eyes are harder, there is a scar on his face, and a Crypts number tattooed on his ear. The only thing that has not changed about him is his autumn-colored hair.

Requiem (WARNING: Book spoilers are below!)[]

Main article: Requiem

In Requiem, you can see Lena's character transformation come full circle. She is braver and more reckless, yet still sensitive and kind. Throughout the book, Lena faces her conflicting feelings with Alex and Julian. When Julian told Lena he loved her, she could not say it back because of Alex. When Lena sees Alex again, she notes that he does not seem like the Alex she once knew. He is silent and angrier, supposedly due to his time spent in the Crypts. Lena also realizes that Alex did not tell her much about his time in the resistance before.

After avoiding each other for three days, Alex and Lena talk. Alex told her that he was taken to the Crypts and got beaten, and there were times when he wished they would have killed him but that the belief he would find Lena again kept him going. He also seems to dislike the fact that Lena moved on from him so quickly. Then, Alex tells Lena that he never loved her and that what they had would stay in the past. Heartbroken, Lena did not want to believe him. But once Lena saved Alex and herself from a bear, Alex is shocked, claiming that the 'old' Lena would have bolted. Then, Lena claimed the 'old' Lena was dead and walked away. Thinking Alex did not love her, Lena stayed with Julian and began to admire his patience and comfort.

Next, Lena's group begins to face conflict with the people on the other side. Cureds cut off their water supply and invaded their space in the Wilds, killing off a guy named Pike and others in the group. Lu betrayed the group by getting cured and working with the government. Then, Lena begins to feel guilty about bringing Julian to the Wilds because she promised him freedom and love, but that freedom was already getting taken away.

Additionally, Lena got jealous when Alex got close to a new girl, Coral, after he attempted to save someone from her group. Despite not liking Coral at first because of her closeness with Alex, Lena comes to admire Coral. Lena saved Coral's life twice, and Coral saved Lena once. Yet, despite Alex distancing himself from Lena, he still showed signs of loving her, such as wanting to comfort her when regulators invaded the Wilds and being upset when she almost got shot.

Later on, Alex and Julian got drunk, and Hunter told Lena that Alex was teaching Julian how to fight. Lena woke up to see Julian's nose dripping with blood, and Alex looked guilty. Alex insisted that they stop their practice, but Julian punched Alex, and Alex punched Julian back. Tack broke up the fight, and Alex told Lena he was sorry for everything. Lena could not look him in the eye, and Alex left the group, giving Lena a note saying that The Tale of Solomon was the only way to explain things. Lena remembered The Tale of Solomon as a baby being split in half as told by her school. So, she believed in the lies Alex told her before.

Then, Lena finds her mother again and discovers that her mom is not how she once remembered her either. She now goes by a new name, Bee, and is rougher around the edges and ignores Lena's presence for a while. When Raven insists that the group goes to Portland, Lena does not want to go due to painful memories. Bee apologizes to Lena for ignoring her and says that she would love to get to know Lena now. Bee admits that she loved Lena's father even though he could not love her back and that there were times she wanted to die in the Crypts, but she never stopped thinking about Lena and her sister Rachel. Bee also claims she did not come to get Lena for her safety.

In Portland, Lena's group plans to break down the walls with bombs. Lena talks to Coral, who tells her that Alex still loves her. Afterward, Bee tells Lena about the real Tale of Solomon story. Instead of splitting the baby in half, one mother agrees while the other mother lets the baby go because she does not want to see the baby injured. Lena thinks back to when Alex first sacrificed his life for hers. When Lena realizes that Alex sacrificed his happiness for hers yet again, she begins to avoid Julian and claims that she cannot love Julian as much as Alex.

When on the mission to break down the walls, Lena saw Hana again because Hana's car almost ran her over. Hana tells Lena that she's sorry about Alex, and Lena tells Hana that he got thrown into the Crypts but escaped. Hana also told Lena that she reported her and Alex because she was jealous of what they had but helped her escape because she felt guilty afterward. Lena slaps Hana, and Hana tells Lena where Grace is. Then, Hana decides to let Lena go, and Lena repays Hana by telling her that a bomb is underneath her husband's house.

Lena is heartbroken to see Raven take a bullet for Pippa, who has the bombs. It is unclear whether Raven survived and Tack holds her. After rescuing Grace from the burning house in Deering Highlands, Lena finds Alex helping out an injured guy named Colin and sees there is no more hatred in his eyes.

Alex approached Lena, and Lena asked him if it was true that he still loved her. Then, Alex told Lena that he still loved her. Lena claimed they had both changed, and Alex admitted that was true too. Lena admitted to Alex that she also did not stop loving him but thinks of Julian, his patience, and his goodness, and wishes that she could pretend nothing changed between her and Alex, but she can’t. Alex told Lena he wouldn’t run away again, and Lena told him she didn’t want him to. Then, Alex cups Lena’s cheek, lets her let out her emotions and kisses her. As people are tearing apart the wall, Alex tells Lena that he’ll find her and won’t let her go again.

It is unclear whether Alex and Lena got back together or if the characters lived or died after Requiem. The author, Lauren Oliver, claimed that she wanted fans to create their own ending to the series.

Physical Appearance[]

A16DB6FA-6BFD-4A47-BC8B-8CA8F3A59FBA

Lena (realistic - Fotor AI)

Lena has always been a bit self-conscious of her body and looks. She describes herself as not ugly but not pretty either. 'In-between,' she says. Her eyes are not green nor brown but a muddle. She's not thin though she isn't fat either. The only thing she was definite about was her 5'2 height: short. However, this isn't particularly short, just under average. She is described as having bangs, long, soft brown hair that nearly reaches her hips, and a splatter of freckles on her nose. Throughout Delirium, her hair was often in a ponytail.

However, Alex Sheathes has made it a point to call her beautiful on many occasions. So often, Lena herself starts to believe it.

Furthermore, it was also mentioned by Hana that: "I've always thought Lena was pretty, but now it occurs to me that at some point—last summer? last year?—she became beautiful. Her eyes seem to have grown even larger, and her cheekbones have sharpened. Her lips on other hand, look softer and fuller. I've never felt ugly next to Lena, but suddenly, I do."

This may hint Lena often overlooks her beauty.

Although, in Pandemonium Lena becomes increasingly thin due to her time spent in the Wilds. In Pandemonium, Julian notes, "Your waist is so small." In Requiem, Hana tells Lena, "You're too skinny."

Personality[]

Lena's main personality traits include her bravery (she risks her life to try and warn Hana of a raid and agrees to try and escape with Alex), resourcefulness (she is able to blend in when posing as 'Lena Jones' and is key in the escape from imprisonment), kindness (such as being more understanding towards Grace than everyone else), and tenacity (time and time again she is put into extreme situations but manages to be strong and find a way out of them). While at the beginning of the first book, much of her true personality was stifled by the enforced fear and close-minded nature of the society she lives in, Lena breaks out of her shell when situations force her to push her own walls and boundaries.

Additionally, Lena is not as outgoing and energetic as her best friend, Hana, and seems to have a more introverted personality. She is shown to prefer spending time alone or with few people (like Alex), to big group settings. She is very loyal to those she cares about and seems to enjoy spending time with only those who she is very close to.

Skills and Interests[]

Lena is an avid long-distance runner and is shown to be very fast and have high stamina. She claims it is "the sole thing I can do better," than Hana. She is also a biker, though it is unknown whether this is for her pleasure or whether she does it because that is simply the easiest way to get around. Furthermore, Lena likes photography and is implied to be a bookworm.
